About Sig Sauer

What You Didn’t Know About Sig Sauer

The Sig Sauer company began in 1853 and was at first a wagon factory - Schweizerische Waggon Fabrik (Swiss Wagon Factory in English) - until the revolutionary design of the Prélaz-Burnand rifle, which this factory manufactured, had won a Switzerland's Federal Ministry of Defense competition and as a result, the company was granted with a contract to produce 30 000 Prélaz-Burnand rifles. This rifle carried the name of Jean-Louis Joseph Prélaz, who was a gunsmith and an army officer Edouard Burnand. The factory then changed its name to Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft - SIG (Swiss Industrial Company in English).

Their production portfolio changed and they started to concentrate on arms, producing and introducing new designs a pioneering the first automatic rifle - The Mondragón Rifle - produced until 1910. Another breakthrough design for the company was the SIG P210 pistol developed in 1937. It’s basis has been a French Model 1935 pistol which the manufacturers from SIG had perfected and eliminated unnecessary and unwanted features. The SIG company purchased two companies in 1970, Hammerli and J.P. Sauer and Sohn, thus the name changed to SIG Sauer. New means of producing were adopted during those times and thus production was upgraded.

The result was the Sig P220 – an upgrade to the P210 that met all the demands of the Swiss Military and Police. This Sig, the P220, was the first Sig Sauer pistol sold in the USA. Although they were selling Browning BDA before, this was the first trademarked Sig pistol sold separately. The Sig company established SIGARMS in the United States in 1985. After a separation and a split, Sig Sauer from Switzerland was purchased by L&O Holding and renamed to Swiss Arms and SIGARMS kept the name Sig Sauer. The American branch changed the name to SIG Sauer in 2007.
